From a Dangerous Crosswalk to Real Change - Arlington County Improves Pedestrian Safety at Langston Boulevard & John Marshall Drive

Arlington County has taken an important step toward improving pedestrian safety at the intersection of Langston Boulevard and John Marshall Drive with the installation of new flashing pedestrian lights.

For years, this crosswalk posed real challenges for pedestrians. Heavy traffic, limited visibility, and fast-moving vehicles made crossing difficult and, at times, unsafe. Residents, runners, and walkers frequently expressed concern, and for many in the community, this intersection became a clear example of how infrastructure can fall short of protecting people.

The addition of flashing lights is a meaningful improvement. By alerting drivers when pedestrians are present, the new system increases awareness and encourages safer driving behavior. It’s a reminder that thoughtful infrastructure changes can have an immediate impact on everyday safety.

This intersection also holds special significance for us. The safety concerns here were the reason See Me Flags was created. Long before improvements were made, this crosswalk highlighted the need for greater pedestrian visibility and advocacy while communities wait for long-term solutions. What began as concern for one intersection grew into a broader mission focused on pedestrian safety.

We’re grateful to Arlington County for listening to community concerns and taking action. Improvements like this show what’s possible when local governments prioritize pedestrian safety and invest in practical, effective solutions.

Safer streets start with awareness, action, and collaboration — and this update is a positive step forward for everyone who uses this crosswalk.
