Fredericksburg Adds See Me Flags to Help Drivers See Pedestrians at Crosswalks

Being seen is an important part of crossing the street. To help make pedestrians more visible to approaching drivers, the City of Fredericksburg, Virginia, is introducing See Me Flags at five crosswalk and trail crossing locations.

Working with the city’s Pathways Committee, Fredericksburg selected crossings without traffic signals where pedestrians and drivers share responsibility for safe crossings. The bright fluorescent and reflective flags give people walking an additional way to draw drivers’ attention as they cross.

A Simple Way to Support Pedestrian Visibility

The program adds an affordable, easy to use visibility tool alongside existing pedestrian safety measures. People take a flag before crossing, carry it across the street, and return it to the station on the other side for the next person.

The goal is to help drivers notice people crossing and encourage safer interactions between drivers and pedestrians. Flags complement careful crossing habits: pedestrians should look for approaching traffic and make sure drivers have stopped or the crossing is clear before entering the road.

Where Fredericksburg Is Adding Crosswalk Flags

The city announced flag stations at these five locations:

  • Princess Anne Street and Canal Path Crossing
  • Caroline Street/Germania Street and Heritage Trail Crossing
  • Caroline Street/Forbes Street and Heritage Trail Crossing
  • Fall Hill Avenue and Canal Path Crossing
  • Washington Avenue and Canal Path Crossing

We’re excited to see the city take this practical step to support pedestrian visibility at community crossings.
